Strategy: Responsibility

If you deal with people who practise closer supervision than you
  • confirm with your boss before taking initiatives
  • avoid threatening the authority of your superiors - check in advance the limits of your authority
  • expect to get more direct orders and instructions than you like
  • be more involved in the work of your subordinates - let them know precisely what you want them to do
  • remember that your staff may be waiting for orders from you before acting - it is up to you to keep them busy
  • do not expect things to happen automatically on your subordinates' initiative - you may have to order it specifically
  • give them special encouragement to try their own ideas when problems arise
  • be ready for workers not to take personal responsibility when mistakes happen
  • let your team know that it is OK for them to overstep their authority occasionally - but that they will be responsible for the outcome
  • remember that there is a risk that a "hands-off" management style will be seen as lacking interest and concern for your team members
